My Process
Reach out to schedule a free 15-minute phone consultation after reviewing my "Insurance and Fees" page to learn if I work with your insurance plan or about my private pay rates. Please be advised that I don't bill or submit claims to insurance plans that aren't listed as they are out-of-network. During our call, you can briefly discuss your need for help and determine if I fit that need. I believe in the power of now, so we will hit the ground running in our first session. I will offer solutions to help you cope with distress during and after our first session. I don't need to know your life story to do that so I won't ask you about things unrelated to NOW. After we meet for one or two sessions, we will develop a treatment plan based on my diagnostic impressions and your treatment desires. You then have individual therapy sessions weekly or biweekly. In our therapy sessions, we work on what we've identified as your needs in your treatment plan. A typical treatment course is between 5-20 sessions for depression and anxiety. Trauma, severe depression, and severe anxiety usually take longer. I will provide resources to guide your learning and practice of techniques and methods outside our therapy sessions. Implementing what you learned outside our sessions is the fastest way to feel better. Therapy is like bodybuilding; the more you work out, the faster the results can be seen.
Do I need to have a mental illness for therapy?
Not at all. However, you will need a mental health diagnosis for insurance to cover therapy. Some people need a little help figuring out the complexities of their careers and relationship issues or seek a deeper understanding of themselves. They know how to ask for help, know when they need it, and have the courage to reach out. Everyone needs help now and then. In our work together, I’ll help you explore and identify your strengths. You can learn how to use those strengths to reduce the adverse effects of the problems you are facing.
What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?
There is a distinction between someone who can do something, and someone with the training and experience to do that same thing professionally. A licensed mental health professional can work with you on approaches that are known to help. They can listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. They can teach you new skills, and help you to develop different perspectives while being completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others knowing what’s going on in your life or judging you for it. A therapist can be ideal if your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion or shame. You won't run the risk that once you feel better, you start to feel worse around that person out of embarrassment.
Can’t I just take medication?
Medication can be effective, but it probably won't solve all your issues. Sometimes medication is needed in conjunction with counseling. Our work together is designed to explore and unpack the problems you are experiencing and expand on your strengths that can help you accomplish your personal goals.
How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?
My approach is Person-Centered. In therapy, you will guide us to the parts of your life we need to work on. Treatment is like driver education. You’ll take the wheel, but I’ll teach you the best routes to get where you’re going. You’ll learn to understand road signs and what they mean. You’ll learn defensive driving skills to be ready to respond if you encounter reckless drivers. I’ll teach you how to maneuver around roadblocks and avoid accidents. Most importantly, you’ll learn about routine car maintenance to prevent car trouble later on. Because each person has different issues and goals for counseling, the road we take will vary depending on the individual..
How long will it take?
It's not possible to say in a general FAQs page. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time counseling can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek counseling in the first place.
I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?
It's great that you want to get the most you can out of therapy sessions. Your active participation and dedication will be crucial to your success.
